SUMMARY:Cancer Control Research Program Seminar ft. Rahul Kanadia\, Ph.D.: Minor Spliceosome: A Molecular Program Target for Metastatic\, Therapy-Resistant Prostate Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Read more → \nVirtual Link: https://miami.zoom.us/j/96147453145?pwd=hl3xkI4lIsV1phbeUNdaRLbh9N6Ogy.1 \nDr. Rahul Kanadia will present on “Minor Spliceosome: A Molecular Program Target for Metastatic\, Therapy-Resistant Prostate Cancer” at the upcoming Cancer Control Research Program Seminar. \nJoin us for an engaging scientific presentation at the Cancer Control Research Program Seminar\, advancing discovery through collaboration and scientific exchange. \nDr. Rahul Kanadia received his graduate training in RNA biology in the laboratory of Dr. Maurice Swanson at the University of Florida\, College of Medicine. His graduate work focused on deconvoluting how tri-nucleotide (CUG)n repeat expansion in the 3′ untranslated region of DMPK causes an autosomal dominant disease called myotonic dystrophy with genetic anticipation. The hypothesis he tested was that the (CUG)n-containing mRNA of DMPK is sequestered in the nucleus\, where it soaks up an RNA-binding protein called Muscleblind-1 (MBNL1)\, and that myotonic dystrophy is in fact caused by the resulting loss of MBNL1 function in regulating the alternative splicing of genes that transition from fetal to adult splice patterns. This finding led to a patent-invoking therapy for myotonic dystrophy through overexpression of MBNL1 protein\, which was licensed by Kate Therapeutics and subsequently acquired by Novartis for $1.1B. For his postdoctoral training in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute laboratory of Dr. Constance Cepko at Harvard Medical School\, he explored the role of RNA processing in retinal development. In 2010\, he started his own laboratory\, where he combined his RNA biology and development training to initiate the study of minor intron splicing in development. Minor introns are a rare class of introns conserved across 1.8 billion years\, and his laboratory has applied an iterative approach to understand why\, how\, and what these introns and the minor intron-containing genes do. His group was the first to report a mouse model of microcephaly and micromelia\, modeling diseases such as MOPD1\, by inhibiting the machinery that splices these introns\, the minor spliceosome. His laboratory also developed a novel bioinformatics strategy to classify introns\, since the identity of an intron dictates the spliceosome that will splice it\, placing introns on a continuum bookended by minor and major introns with minor-like\, hybrid\, and major-like introns populating the middle. This work has resulted in a database (midb.pnb.uconn.edu) that allows users to assess intron identity across 263 species in all six eukaryotic groups. The answer to persistence proved to be enrichment: minor intron-containing genes execute proliferation\, DNA replication and repair\, E2F and MAPK signaling. Those are precisely the functions metastatic cancer leverages. Working with Dr. Mark Rubin and Dr. Anke Augspach\, they identified U6atac snRNA as a cancer vulnerability and developed siU6atac\, now the founding asset of Verintas Therapeutics\, Inc where he serves as the founder and CEO. \nThis lecture is part of the Cancer Control Research Program Seminar Series\, which provides a forum for invited speakers to present their latest research discoveries and promote scientific exchange and collaboration across the research community.

SUMMARY:Joint Recruitment Seminar hosted by The Dept. of Cell and Systems Biology and SCCC ft. Mirazul Islam\, Ph.D.: "Recording Cellular Life Histories: Multimodal Insights into Development and Cancer"
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Link: https://miami.zoom.us/j/97513482767 \nRead more → \nMirazul Islam\, PhD\, is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His research focuses on stem cell biology\, colorectal cancer\, evolutionary adaptation\, and the development of single-cell technologies to understand tissue homeostasis and disease. Mirazul developed a single-cell multimodal platform for in vivo lineage tracing and temporal recording\, enabling the reconstruction of clonal evolution during the transition from colonic precancer to cancer. He also discovered a previously unrecognized intestinal cell state and uncovered an evolutionarily conserved mechanism regulating cellular dormancy in the intestine. His work has been recognized with the Vanderbilt Provost Pathbreaking Discovery of the Year Award and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) Graduate Student of the Year Award. He has also received funding through the VICC Pilot Project Award\, the Digestive Disease Research Center Pilot Project Award\, and the VICC Career Enhancement Award.

SUMMARY:2026 Sylvester Design and Management of Cancer Clinical Trials Course
DESCRIPTION:The Sylvester Design and Management of Cancer Clinical Trials Course launched in 2019 to provide everyone involved in developing and managing clinical trials with key information to advance translational clinical research\, foster better clinical trial design\, and ultimately improve patient care. \nWe believe that clinical research education works best when people learn together—not in silos. This course brings the full research team together\, including PIs\, advanced practice providers\, nurses\, clinical research coordinators\, regulatory and lab staff\, other clinical research professionals\, PhD scientists\, and trainees at all levels. \nThroughout the live course and/or by watching course recordings\, participants learn basic research concepts and principles that underlie the design and actual day-to-day conduct of cancer clinical trials. Participants gain a strong foundation in clinical research\, along with content tailored to different team roles and experience levels. By learning in a shared virtual environment\, attendees build common understanding\, strengthen teamwork\, and become better equipped to collaborate for clinical trial success. \nRegister Now! https://Sylvester.org/ClinicalTrialsCourse \nFree\, Virtual Six-Week Course \nEvery Friday\, Sept. 11 – Oct. 16; 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. ET \nSpecial pre- and post-course workshops \n• August 28: Fundamentals of Clinical Research: From Protocol to Practice \n• October 30: AI in Clinical Research: A Leader’s Guide to Strategy and Governance (paid add-on) \nDates \n\nSept. 11\, 2026\nSept. 18\, 2026\nSept. 25\, 2026\nOct. 2\, 2026\nOct. 9\, 2026\nOct. 16\, 2026\n\nTime: 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. \nLocation: Virtual ONLY.
